FireAntEater™ Informational Article

Introduction - Fire Ants
• There are many types of fire ants. This article focuses primarily on the RIFA, generally considered the most problematic of all fire ants. In the US, the black fire ant is equally troublesome, but is much less widespread than the RIFA.
• The RIFA was introduced to the United States from South America in the 1930's, and is now common throughout the Southern United States. The RIFA has become a major pest worldwide, spreading to Australia, China, Taiwan and the Philippines and with more expansion forecasted.
• In FIREANTEATER LLC’s article “Fire Ant Facts,” there is considerable information about the RIFA: its characteristics, colony life, behavior, nesting, life cycle, and damage they do. There is also some information on the imported black fire ant.

Dealing With RIFAs
The Red Imported Fire Ant (RIFA) is a hardy, adaptive, tenacious creature that is here to stay. No matter how they are dealt with or whichever product(s) are used, they will be back.  The best that can be done to deal with these pests is to put in place a safe, effective, control program to manage them; a program that keeps the yard or property safe for family, pets, livestock, and plants in an environmentally friendly manner.

  • Fire Ant Control: Exterminate or Deter
  • • Fire Ant Control Products can be classified into one of two categories: a deterrent or a killer (exterminater).
  • • Deterrents (it is claimed,) keep fire ants away by use of chemicals spread over a large area. These products are expensive. We do not not know about their effectiveness, environmental friendliness or their safety around people, plants and pets. (Note: Molasses has been used for small gardens/areas. The claim is that it introduces micro-organisms into the soil that the fire ants don't care for.)
  • • Extermination products kill fire ants once they arrive (a colony has started). They may or may not kill the queen(s). Almost all of these are chemically based but some use baits as an attraction and various methods of extermination, once baited. Extermination (Killer) products that do not kill all the fire ants (including the queen(s), affect the overall health of the colony by killing significant numbers of colony fire ants which gather food, etc. resulting in the demise of the colony or movement of what is left of the colony. Except for FireAntEater™ products (see below), again we do not not know about their effectiveness, environmental friendliness or their safety around people, plants and pets.
  • Whatever type of fire ant control product is used, a regular treatment program will be required as the fire ants will return.

  • The USDA is also experimenting with natural predators (mainly the tiny phorid fly) to control fire ants.  “These phorid flies are natural predators of fire ants and can dispatch them with the grisly efficiency of a science fiction monster — implanting eggs in their little ant chests that then hatch into larvae and eat their little ant brains " (San Antonio Express News).  “According to the articles, experts say the phorid fly will almost certainly not wipe out the fire ant, but could cut local populations up to 30% and make them more vulnerable.”  [Author’s note: One has to wonder though what the (environmental) effect on other, beneficial insects will be. We hope it won’t be the oft-made mistake of the “cure that is worse than the ailment.”]

FireAntEater™ Products

  • FIREANTEATER LLC develops green, safe fire ant
  • control products, Made in the USA, that kill fire ants.
  • The AntCrusher H-1000

  •      Anyone who has encountered a fire ant colony mound has observed the vicious frenzy created when the mound is disturbed in any way and the results can be quite painful. As explained above, this is a natural behavioral characteristic of the fire ant to “protect” the colony, particularly, the larvae deposited close to the ground surface.
  •      This naturally aggressive behavior is exploited by the patented FireAntEater™ AntCrusher H-1000. We call this patented exploitation the 3 As - Agitate, Attack and Annihilate. When an H-1000 unit is turned on and placed on top of a fire ant colony mound, the vibrations of its rollers rolling over its base plate create vibrations which agitate the fire ants into a continuous attack on the unit where they are annihilated (crushed by the rollers). The unit does not kill the queen(s). Instead, it crushes so many fire ants, that the “health” (the ability of the colony to sustain itself) is compromised.
  •      The AntCrusher H-1000 is powered by a solar cell with two, auto-recharging batteries for use in reduced or no sunlight conditions. It can be used over and over again for years without replenishment or replacement, making it the most cost-effective fire ant killer (control) product available. It is Green (chemical-free and no baits), Safe (for children, plants & pets), Lasts (for years), Fast, Weatherproof, Easy to Use, Warranted, MADE in the USA and IT WORKS.

  • FIREANTEATER LLC also has been granted a patent on a Fire Ant Killer product which, although tested and proven, is not yet in production.  This product forces steam from boiled tap water through an applicator and into the fire ant tunnel network. The steam is at very low pressure (e.g.-.1 psi above atmospheric) to completely permeate the colony tunnel network killing all the ants, including the queen(s), workers, the larvae, etc. This product was designed for commercial, industrial and municipal applications. The C-1000 is also Green and safe.
